FFF ~ Back to It…

I’ve missed a few weeks of Friday’s Fave Five because of Christmas and all but I’m getting back to it now. Thank you to Susanne at Living to tell the Story for hosting this event each Friday. Click on the logo above to join in…

1. Fresh flowers in the winter are such a treat. Our winters can be pretty dark so it’s so nice when the sun shines and brightens things up.

2. Our very cold and clear weather has afforded us some beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Sunrises are easier to see from inside my warm house then sunsets. This is a Sunrise…

3. Lots of good food has been cooked and eaten around here. These were the lamb chops we had on New Year’s Eve with a pepper cream sauce.

4. Dear’s new smoker is becoming a favorite around here.  Dear has smoked ribs, a Prime Rib Roast, and Pork Roasts in it already.

5. This last one is therapy I purchased for myself for $1.60. When I was little I always wished I’d get a package of Life Savers like this for Christmas. I saw them at the store and then saw kids at church who were flaunting them on Christmas morning. I never got one. When I was at the store this week there they were…a whole table of them for half-price. I stood there looking, then I picked one up and opened it to check the flavors of the rolls inside. I almost walked away and then I decided it was time to lay the wanting to rest and I threw one in the cart with a smile on my face and walked away. Ahhh…I’m free from that deprivation in my childhood!

6. This is an extra. Our daughter Katie was feeling ill at the beginning of the week and we were afraid it was appendicitis but it ended up being a kidney infection that could be treated with antibiotics and she’s feeling a whole lot better.  Yesterday a bag of groceries tore and a large bottle of juice landed on my big toe. Boy was I in a lot of pain and I thought it was broken but it’s feeling so much better today.

I’m looking forward to catching up with all of you this week…

Photobucket replaced all my photos with ugly black and grey boxes and they are holding my photos hostage until I pay them lots of money. I’m slowly going through all my posts and trying to clean them up and replacing some photos. Such a bother.

  1. Poor Katie – I hope she’s feeling a whole lot better – a kidney infection is a miserable thing – and your poor toe…
Lovely five faves, though – especially that smoker. The Great Dane my have one in his future.

  2. Oh, those Lifesaver books were the highlights of our Christmas stockings when I was growing up. What a great memory you’ve given me to think about.

  3. Glad your toe is okay….that can be so painful. Praying Katie’s infection clears up easily….I grew up with those. YUCK. I love smoked meats…I’ve never seen a small smoker like that….how fun!

    • Arti,
It’s electric with a digital thermometer and timer. Very nice controls and it works real well. 4 shelves with a liquid catch drain. It does not get hot on the outside of the unit. You have to use it outdoors. You add woodchips or wood pellets for the smoke. If you aren’t using the smoke feature you can use the unit inside the garage or somewhere else that’s enclosed. I hope that is helpful. Dear really likes it and how simple it is to use…

  4. Ow. Glad the toe is just bruised although that is bad enough. Enjoy sucking those lifesaver, you will be pushing the tip of your tongue in the hole and wiggling it a bit against you lips like kid at least once, right?

  5. You had a very colorful week as in varied. But I thought of that when I saw the lifesavers….I do remember those thought I don’t remember getting any.

  6. I always wanted one of those Lifesaver books, too! I remember they were popular for the gift exchanges at school (shows how old I am, that we had Christmas gift exchanges in public school.) I always wished I would get one, but never did:( Good for you, for being your own Santa! I’ll be checking the clearance racks next year.

  7. Ellen,

Enjoyed the post. I would love to come and be a guest at your home just because of the abundance of good food you have at your house!! The lamb chops look yummy, and those smoked food — I am feeling hungry just looking at Mr. B’s smoker, and the meat in it.

Sorry to hear about your big toe. Will pray for speedy recovery.

I love that you picked up that candy pack for yourself. Very cute.

  8. great list! that lifesaver candy book thing was always in my stocking every christmas when I was a girl. great memories!!
Hope your toe is feeling better and will say a prayer for your Katie…happy FFF!

  9. oh poor Katie and your poor toe! I’ve had kidney infections before and they are very painful. I’ve never had a broken toe but I’ve stubbed it and that’s bad enough. Hope you’re both feeling much better soon!

We always put those life-saver pkgs in our kids’ stockings. You’ve got me thinking about what I always wanted as a child – one of those giant chocolate bunnies at Easter but – I don’t think I’ll indulge myself- I’ve a feeling it’s cheap chocolate 🙂

Dear looks like he’s having fun with that smoker. I think Roger would like that too.

Beautiful sunrise and tulips – I’m going to look for some tulips too – fresh flowers are wonderful especially this time of year.

    Happy weekend Ellen!

  11. I love the picture of the tulips with the light shining on them! I have that exact same vase 🙂

I never got a Lifesavers candy storybook either when I was a kid! I’m glad you fulfilled a childhood fantasy by buying one.

  12. I almost bought some fresh flowers at the store today. They do brighten up the drabness of winter. Beautiful sunrise there!

I have never ever had lamb.

We used to get those Lifesaver books every Christmas. I’m so glad you finally got one! I’m not a big fan of hard candy nowadays, but loved them way back when, especially the yellow and orange ones.

    Glad your toe is better!

  13. So sorry about the jar on the toe, Ellen. I’m glad it is recovering and not broken. I tripped and fell 3 or 4 weeks ago and did quite a number on mine. I’m walking with the help of a special “boot”. Not fun!

Loved your lifesavers story — I used to covet those as a child as well.

And, I’m so glad that your daughter is getting better.

    Happy week-end!

  14. One of my kids brought up something about those lifesaver candy books .. . just a memory (at Chritmas ) … thinking they do not make them any more. If I see them, I think I’ll pick up a few pkgs.

  15. Glad dd is ok!
    Ouch on your toe!
Love the flowers…we need to see that and look fwd to Spring!
When you have time, tell me about the smoker. I would like to get dh one. It looks like you have it tucked right on to the porch. Is it electric, gas, wood?
    I know nothing! Help me!
He could make his own kielbasa! 🙂

  16. Poor toe! I had to smile at the lifesaver book — I’m SO glad that you treated yourself — my mother taught me that if you can treat yourself to little small luxuries — your life will be more joyful — It’s nice when just a little treat can make you smile!

  17. I love those lifesaver storybooks! I’ll have to look for some Christmas ones on sale too!

Love the picture of the tulips and the sunrise. Beautiful. Glad Katie and your toe are better.

  18. Beautiful sunrise and I always love how the sun shines into the house more on these winter days. About the Lifesavers Candy Books….I remember them well and this was one small treat we did have at Christmas sometimes. It was probably the best gift. What kid doesn’t want his own candy book? I’m glad you treated yourself after all these years.
