Still Plugging Away…

…and the end is in sight!

Some of you have wondered “Where does she put all that stuff?” I wanted to show you my nifty little pull down ladder that is hidden most days neatly tucked away in the ceiling. Last year we totally emptied that attic and put everything in the basement for sorting through. Since I’ve been back in Washington I’ve been sorting through and everything has one of three destinations now…in the trash, in the garage sale pile, or repacked nicely and back in the attic. Going up and down those stairs heaving boxes up there has been a good workout!

Christmas is up there. Easter is up there. Thanksgiving is up there. Katie’s keepsakes are up there. Suitcases are up there. Rex and Verna’s stuff that we won’t get rid of is up there. Papers we need to keep for a couple more years are up there. You get the drift. See those 3 blue boxes at the top of the stairs…if you ever need wine goblets for a big party or reception call me.

Just a very few more boxes and I’ll be done with this project whoohoo!!  And in other news…

Some big equipment and workers are arriving today to work on this part of our property. The utilities have been marked so we don’t have any unfortunate accidents. Puncturing a gas line wouldn’t be good. We are going to be doing some grading and a trench will be dug along the property line on the right to put in a retaining wall. Eventually this will be a driveway and the area at the top of the photo will be built up and leveled out…

Fun times around the homestead. So today I hope to finish those remaining boxes and then put on my rain coat and mud boots so I can watch some heavy equipment make noise moving dirt. What are you doing?

  1. We had a garret put in over the garage and can’t imagine what we’d do without it — no basements in CA, ridiculously skimpy storage space in the house, no extra “storage” rooms… Does your attic area cover the whole house?

  2. I’ve always thought those ladder thingy’s in the roof were so cool and I’ve always wished I had one. Our attic is nothing but insulation and you’d fall through the ceiling if you made a wrong step up there. Not only that but the access hole is in our closet. Who, in their right mind puts an access hole in a back corner of the closet? I always think the builders had a good laugh about that one imagining us trying to get up there.

Anyway, you sure are doing a good job getting everything all sorted out. Wanna come for coffee and do mine? :v)

  3. Good for you Ellen! It feels so good to get organized.

I’m in a very disorganized state – painting the kitchen (yikes – I’m not sure I like it) and the fireplace/computer/library room and the hallway.

I know it will look good when it’s done but it makes me feel a little discombobulated 🙂

Looking forward to the big machine photo shoot.

  4. I live your nifty loft. You have been very busy since you arrived ‘home’. It is always great to see the end of a project. Outdoor projects….I’ll be back to see what you are up to. Kathy (MGCC) PS I think you are GREAT too! (smiling)

  5. No…you don’t want to touch any gas lines…that I know. We had it happen on the farm…and we paid the consequences…not the equipment contractor.

Have fun sorting…and getting everything in order! Oh…and watching the digging.

  6. I love that attic ladder. If I had one like that I might be able to venture up into our attic too .. the step ladder with the jump at the top .. is not for me.
The landscaping and retaining wall project is so exciting. . .surely you’ll keep us posted.

  7. Oh..that ladder, would be such a wonderful idea for the grands..
I’m glad that you store your stuff up in the attic, rather than the crawl space. My stuff was all water damaged a few years ago…
I know have a pile of boxes called Marg’s Favorites.
Do you need a pair of boots?

  8. I’ve been out mowing and trying to spray all the nasty weeds. When we built our home I was here everyday watching all of it…SO FUN. Too bad you live so far away. Steph’s party the other night could have used more matching wine glasses. I didn’t have 9 of anything…but we figured out how to mix nicely. It feels SO GOOD to go through EVERYTHING…I did that with all of our Christmas things. Now I’m working on figuring out what to put in the storage areas of our daughter is who has moved out…storage for extra dining room stuff. It’s so freeing to purge and organize.

  9. Well good luck with the property improvements. 🙂 All our stuff is up in the attic as well. Great storage facility if you ask me. Glad everything is getting organized 🙂

  10. Well Ellen B, I’m not doing anything as exciting as you. Cleaning and rearranging…makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something worthwhile. You may have inspired me to clean out from under my beds. I’ve got boxes and boxes of “Vintage” clothing I could get rid of.

I hope the work goes well and I’ll pray that noone hits a line by accident.

    xoxo cori g.

  11. Oh Ellen, you have been a busy, busy lady. I bet it feels so good though to get so much accomplished (I wouldn’t know, since I seem to just sit on my bottom in front of a computer most of the time!) Can’t wait to see your new drive and retaining wall. How exciting. laurie

  12. you’re gonna be the first person I call if ever I need goblets…..or chargers….or tablecloths……or plates….or napkinrings…..or flatware….or………

    😉
