what an incredible experience this was with only photographs…
Bear with me because this post is going to have lots of photos! We found out that Snow Geese like to congregate at Snowgoose Produce in Conway, Washington. We were in La Conner and Conway was on our way back home. We decided to try to find this spot. As we drove on Fir Island Road I spotted a sea of white to our right. Dear turned down the country lane and stopped in front of these Snow Geese grazing in this field.
I watched them hoping maybe some would get tired of sitting and would fly. I had been told it’s amazing to see large groups of them in flight.
A few of them got excited and started to fly…
Then I heard a loud indistinct noise coming from the distance. I looked to my right and exclaimed “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, Dear here they come, they’re coming” He jumped out of the car to stand with me as we observed this amazing sight!
Geese that at first appeared like locusts were swarming to this little spot where we were standing.
We started to hear the distinct honking fill the air. Very loud coming from the thousands of birds approaching.
Our excitement mounted as they got closer and closer.
They were flying over our heads and I was praising the Lord for this special birthday gift to me! Thank you Lord!
I wish I could share the audio of what this sounded like. It was so much more amazing in person.
This truly was one of the coolest outdoor experiences I’ve had!
Snow geese are harbingers of the changing seasons. They fly south for the winter in huge, honking flocks that may appear as a “U” formation or simply as a large “snowstorm” of white birds. They spend the colder seasons in southern coastal marshes, bays, wet grasslands, and fields. Their diet is entirely vegetarian, consisting of grasses and grains, grazed from damp soils or even shallow water

We saw those the last couple of years in La Conner too! Always from a distance. I always thought they were huge flocks of seagulls or something. Amazing to see they’re really white geese! I didn’t believe so many could be together at once!
Happy Birthday Ellen .. what a delight to see such a beautiful flock of birds fly and call out to each other in song.
I’m sure the farmers would be quite happy for them to move on . .but I imagine they’ll do what they’ve done for years.

Glorious. My mother in law lives on a lake…there are a few snow geese mixed in with other kinds…and not quite that many but one time we heard and saw a cloud of them descend….I know what you mean…the majesty, the power of the collective group, the splendor of each one in flight. Truly amazing…so glad you got to see this…the white of the Snow geese is totally different than what we saw…beautiful. I LOVE the color of your last picture…

Oh my goodness, that sight is amazing. I thought we had lots of geese here but that is absolutely a sight to behold.
How amazing is that? They also gather in large numbers on the delta of the Fraser River here in British Columbia…but I have never been out to see that.

What a great post! I have been where you were — watching the snow geese fly in with great abandon! My dad lives nearby and it is a favorite form of entertainment when guests visit in the springtime — a trip to see the geese.
This year several huge flocks have decided to go off their flight track and have ended up at the wildlife refuge nearby. I have been enjoying their presence for several weeks now.

no offense – because you know I love you – but – seems more like a scene from “The Birds” than from the Lord – HA!
Yes…we did make reference to “The Birds” and we have been to Bodega Bay where the movie was filmed and I do even have a t-shirt…but I spoke of my desire to see the trumpeter swans or snow geese in flight that very morning and how wonderful that would be and then it happened so unexpectedly and I praised the Lord on the spot cuz he’s good to me in these ways… :0)

Hi Ellen, I’m glad I wandered over here. This is almost incredible, all those snow geese congregated in one place. Thank you for sharing with us.
We have the snow birds here. They are almost as thick. I posted about them last year, I see them on the shores of our lake all around again this year.
Seems there are less motorized RVs and more travel trailers this year.
