DIY Master Shower

We had plans to replace our Master Shower well over a year ago. We purchased the tile then and waited for the right time to begin the project. Our hard well water didn’t do any favors to the floor of this one piece shower insert and it was frustrating to try to clean it. Dear took the old shower stall out and it was hauled to the dump. We envisioned the project being done during the summer but that didn’t happen.

Each step along the way took lots of planning and tweaking.

The floor tile went in first and then it was covered up to protect it during the rest of the project.

At one point we didn’t think we had purchased enough of the 12 x 24 tile sections and we returned to the tile store to see what options we had. We found these decorative 8×8 tiles and added some of the floor tiles to frame them and get a 12 x 12 format. (Did you understand that?).

Greg’s left hand only works at 30% since his stroke so this project was a lot more difficult than the last shower tile project he completed at our old home in Kenmore.

Time to apply the grout.

Time for fixtures and safety bars. Another nerve wracking endeavor to cut the holes just right and get them into studs.

Success!

Vanity kicks in now because my shampoos and other product stick out like a sore thumb on these pretty niche shelves because of the color of the packaging.

All that is left for this project is to touch up some of the walls and do some paint touch up.

I’m enjoying our new shower and thankful that Dear persevered during this very tough project. There were times in the process that we both just wanted to walk away.

  1. Beautiful! On my list of “wants” at some point. Nothing wrong with our current shower (looks just like yours) but would sure upgrade our master bath!

  2. Ellen, I was in tears as I scrolling through the pictures and reading of all the challenges that came up along the way. Greg is one incredible person! Doing all of that work with only 30% usage of one hand…well, there just aren’t words. I love the design of the shower as well as how the design of the tiles in the middle stand out! Just incredibly beautiful. I know you will enjoy it all the more because of your husband’s perseverance!

  3. Well done! Quite a project to accomplished by himself. I’m sure you will enjoy it. We need to do a similar project in our master bath as it is 50 years old and really needs replacing.

  4. Bravo to Greg! I’m very impressed with his persistence. And using a membrane is a lot easier than hot mopping. I’ve used similar small tile for the floor of the shower as well — nice to have some slip-resistance built in.

  5. What a fabulous job hubby did. He did such a wonderful job! The one thing I would like to do is get rid of our old tub and put a shower in with no glass, just curtains like you have. A first-class job and all the coloring of the tile goes together perfectly!

  6. Oh wow – it looks amazing. Somehow I missed this post. I love, love that you included the safety bars and a little seat. I can attest to how important those features can be!!

  7. SO glad I came back to find this post! Oh my goodness. What a project! First of all, it is lovelyl I love your tile choices, especially the decorative border that was a “tweak.” But also, I am amazed at Greg’s skill and tenacity, even doing much of the project after his stroke! This shower is actually an “Ebenezer” in your lives . . . a monument of sorts that testifies “thus far, the Lord has helped us.” Beautiful in every way!

I read all comments and appreciate them.
