Before & After- Deck Side

This is what the deck side of our house looked like when we moved here in 1998.

First change out was the stairwell window. The porch you see to the right in this photo has been enclosed and is now our family room with french doors onto the deck.

Dear built a temporary platform to be able to hoist the window up and get it set into the opening.

Next he built the deck in anticipation of Josh and Laura’s rehearsal dinner in August of 2001.

The deck got an extension sometime after 2001 so we could reach the garage from the house on decking. The house got a facelift with new horizontal siding.

Our deck covers changed over the years, too. These two are serving us very well currently. This photo shows the extended deck and the difference between the horizontal siding and vertical siding to the left of the deck.

Here’s a shot that shows the house with the completed horizontal siding.

One more addition this summer is this privacy fence we put in.

Here’s a view from our house without the privacy fence.

And this is the view with the privacy fence.

We really are enjoying this new privacy fence. It gives this whole area a more finished feel and we aren’t totally open to the surrounding neighbors anymore.

Some reflections…

Our two sons born almost exactly 2 years apart were married 14 years apart, one in 2001 and the other in 2015. So our 3 kids were married in 2001, 2011, and 2015.

July 2015 was a tough month for me. It was as if someone had let the air out of my tires. I’m happy to say that I’m getting back to my old self now in August!

I also have to admit that summer is probably one of my least favorite seasons. Even though I was born and raised in Southern California enjoying the beaches and spreading coco butter on my body to sunburn tan, sitting in the sun does not give me pleasure anymore. I enjoy the sunshine while sitting in the shade or under an umbrella. These days my favorite time at the beach is in the winter.

How’s your summer going?

  1. Lots of hard work and tlc..It looks wonderful! Summer is not my favorite either. My hubby has his three shoulder surgeries(in three months) behind him now. That had been our main focus. My oldest daughter had a babyboy (her first) on May 31rst. They live in Chicago and I am not sure when I will be able to visit. God knows… The picline was removed at the end of July. So now we are free from the trips to Portand. Whew.. I am still a bit tired from it all…

  2. All the changes you have made over the years have really added to your home value and enjoyment, Ellen! The privacy fence is really nice..it makes the deck look like a room. I also love your deck covers. Your husband is a hard worker and does very professional work.
I think everyone goes through periods of the malaise from time to time..whether it’s exhaustion or hormonal or just the blues…zI’m glad you are feeling better. I agree about summer…the older I get the less I like hot weather or humidity!

  3. You have done a lot of improvements on your house, it looks great now ! I love spring and summer, but I don’t like to sit in the sun neither ! I have always preferred the shade, even as a young girl.

  4. Beautiful changes and I think the privacy fence is just the thing! Winter is not my favorite, autumn is. Still, I am enjoying this August we’re in and don’t want to wish summer away.

  5. You two have made such great improvements to your home…giving it your own personal touches, making it “yours” and making it beautiful!! Your deck is so inviting.

Summer is not my favorite either. Basically, heat and humidity are not my favorite…I do like summer activities. I am glad that you are feeling more like yourself. I imagine that you needed some recovery, both physically and emotionally, after all of the wedding prep, wedding day, wedding company…and heat!!

  6. You’ve become a true Pacific Northwesterner! I love the warmth of the sun (Florida in the Winter) but never “lie out” like we used to do as kids (basting ourselves as you say). Enjoyed the before and afters and you two did a wonderful job. We did those projects in our past life … Remodeling the home where we raised our four … Wouldn’t have missed it all, but glad at our ages we don’t have to climb ladders and platforms anymore. ( of course the word ‘we’ doesn’t quite apply as I’m sure you know. )

  7. I really like your privacy fence! Can you tell me the height? Also, is this something you constructed or did you purchase somewhere?

    • Linda, These are 3 standard sections of fencing that home depot sells that are 5 feet five inches tall and 8 feet wide. The posts are separate and he used these great post anchors that the depot sells that go into the ground for about 3 feet and hold the post secure. I hope that helps…
