Morning has broken,
like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken,
like the first bird
Praise for the singing,
praise for the morning
Praise for the springing
fresh from the word
Sweet the rain’s new fall,
sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall,
on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness
of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness
where his feet pass
Mine is the sunlight,
mine is the morning
Born of the one light,
Eden saw play
Praise with elation,
praise every morning
God’s recreation
of the new day
Words: Eleanor Farjean, children’s author and poet, 1881-1965.
Read about this wonderful hymn and it’s interesting history here. You might find the words familiar because of it’s international fame brought about by Cat Stevens’ recording in 1971.
Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
the name of the Lord is to be praised!
Psalm 113: 2-3
This particular sunrise greeted me on January 7th. I took the screen off our upper bedroom window to capture it in all it’s glory. Screens have a way of muddling the view. Hanging out the window in the cool of the morning to get some different angles before the beauty was gone in a flash was a wonderful way to become fully awake. Do you take screens off of windows to get a good shot?

Oh, I love this song! I remember well Cat Stevens recording. I hadn’t remembered all the words, though, until you posted them.
I love your sunrise photos. The last time I tried to capture a sunrise from inside my house, I encountered your same problem: screens on the windows.
I do have one screen off in the kitchen just for photos! Lovely. Glad that you did it on this day.
I’ve loved that song since….forever! Lovely photos to accompany it, too. I confess to not being a fan of the timing of sunrise…on work days I am usually in the shower then, while on off days I seem to regularly miss that time of day altogether. 🙂
Very interesting in light of Cat Stevens’ faith today. I had no idea that it was written so long ago.
Thank you, on two counts Ellen. First, thank you for bringing that beautiful hymn to mind. I sang it through, here in the dining room. Second, thank you for the link to the origin. It was all new to me.
I’ve always enjoyed that song and it’s deeper meaning. Gorgeous photo’s you’ve paired it with.
I love this song, Ellen. The words always melt me into a puddle! And the photos are amazing – simply amazing!! Taking off the screens to capture the shots – now I call that absolute dedication! 🙂 I have to say I haven’t taken off the screens for pictures yet… because I will have to admit to my husband I would have no earthly idea how to pop those things back. 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Gorgeous watercolor skies. I can just see you ripping off the screens and hanging out the window. Fun!
Beautiful skies! And I’ve always loved that song. Didn’t realize it was a hymn, though.
Beautiful shots, Ellen! Love that Hymn too and I can’t help but hear Cat Stevens sing it.
Beautiful. I love sunrise and sunset photos. I usually get them by going outdoors, even in the cold. It’s only for a few minutes. If I have to, I will take them through a window, but haven’t gone to the great trouble of taking screens off. I just find a window without a screen. 🙂 Love the song.
