Daffodils ~ William Wordsworth

Daffodils ~ William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee;
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

  1. I can imagine how it must feel to stand on the edge of one of these fields and have yellow dots as far as the eye can see.

    There was a farmer near me that planted a large hillside in daffodils and every year they would spread until it covered every available inch. People would drive for miles and park to look at the expanse of yellow. Schools planned field trips to view the sight. And, I would always take my guest for a drive down that road in the springtime.

    Then the farmer died, his kids sold the farm and the new owner took a plow to the field and in one afternoon destroyed a decade of work along with the hopes, dreams and enjoyment of thousands of people. It also left many schools scrambling to fill the void in their schedules.

  2. I love Worsdworth and especially that poem. And you have spectacular pictures to go with it. I may just have to buy buy some daffodils now.

  3. I wanted to get married in April so I could decorate the church and reception room with daffodils! Sadly, for the flower arrangement plans, I was married in July.
