Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming
Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.
Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
To show God’s love aright, she bore to men a Savior,
When half spent was the night.
The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger found Him,
As angel heralds said.
This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
True Man, yet very God, from sin and death He saves us,
And lightens every load.
O Savior, Child of Mary, who felt our human woe,
O Savior, King of glory, who dost our weakness know;
Bring us at length we pray, to the bright courts of Heaven,
And to the endless day!

This is such a beautiful hymn. Hearing it sung always brings tears to my eyes.
I’ve never seen all the words to this before..or maybe I’ve only read the first verse. It is truly beautiful. We don’t use word this beautiful anymore.
Good morning Ellen B.,
What a beautiful hymn and so appropriate for the Christmas season.
I hope you have a great day!
God bless,

I love this Christmas carol. It takes me back to my childhood and teen years when we would sing it in choir and for our Christmas concerts at church. It is such a lovely and elegant carol.
Merry Christmas!

I first sang this Advent Carol in girls chorus in middle school. I’ve loved it ever since. I seldom hear in sung on CDs; do you?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen it on a cd. We sang it in a Christmas Cantata years ago and I’ve loved it since :0)
I love that hymn, Ellen!
Lovely Ellen…thank you! One of my favorites! Very pretty.
