Friday’s Fave Five ~ Summer!

Looking back over the first week of summer 2009 here are my top 5!

On Saturday Dear and I explored Malibu Lagoon State Park and saw some great sights including the historical Adamson House.

After walking and enjoying the sea air we had breakfast at the Marmalade Cafe in Malibu. Dear and I enjoy eating breakfast out together.

Oops more food. On Sunday we barbecued a tri-tip roast and got 3 full meals from it. The first night we made sandwiches with the meat and a roasted Poblano chile. On Tuesday I made these quesadillas with caramelized onion and whole green chilies that I cut up along with pinto beans. I like to get the whole pinto beans and mash them myself. We have a great Mexican market here in town that makes their own Guacamole and salsa. I can’t buy avocados and make the guacamole myself for as cheap as I buy the freshly made at this store.

I always love seeing this plant here in Southern California from the Agave Family. It’s called Our Lord’s Candle Yucca whipplei. Beginning in April and continuing through July, Our Lord’s Candle blooms abundantly in Chaparral and Oak Woodland in elevations up to 2500 feet. Willow and I saw this beautiful example of one on our Thursday walk in her neighborhood.

Now my absolute favorite thing about this week is looking forward to our road trip to Seattle beginning on Saturday. On Saturday we will stop 5 hours up the road at a wedding of my cousin’s son enjoying all the fun and then on Sunday morning we’ll drive the rest of the way to Seattle. I’m looking forward to seeing all our kids and getting the deck all set for summer festivities. I’ll be in the Seattle area for 6 whole weeks…whoohoo!

Photobucket is holding all my photos that I stored on their site from 2007-2015 hostage replacing them with ugly grey and black boxes and asking for a large ransom to retrieve them. It is a slow process to go through all my posts deleting the ugly boxes.

  1. Another lovely week, Ellen! I love the shots of “Our Lord’s Candle” – I can’t say I have seen it before!

Wow – 6 whole weeks in Seattle! I know you will just have LOADS of fun! Have a safe trip!

  2. Oh my goodness! Those quesadillas an guacamole look soooooo good! I think I’m going to have to go have Mexican for lunch today! LOL!

Our Lord’s Candle is gorgeous! I’ve not seen that yucca before. Our neighbors have some very nice yucca plants – but they are much thinner stalks of flowers. Very pretty — but nothing like that one!!!

Have fun in Seattle! 6 weeks! Wow! That’s great!

  3. My ears perked up at your mention of Adamson House. I love visiting historical places and edifices.

    Our Lord’s Candle – what a beauty!

Have fun on the road trip to Seattle (My aunt and her family are making a road trip too — but from Seattle to NC; about the same time as your trip)

  4. The Malibu Lagoon State park looks so pretty. I love that things like that still exist in CA. The state has done a good job of preserving its beauty. The food looks fabulous too!

  5. I love your photo of Our Lord’s Candle, I’d never seen that before. And your photos of the food made me hungry 🙂

Have a wonderful time in Seattle! (Please show us pictures of your deck when you get it all set up for summer!)

  6. My favorite is the picture of the state park and those lovely water birds. You certainly do have some gorgeous scenery in your part of the world!

  7. It’s always fun to see what you are up to….
We missed you and who knows maybe we need to do a sporting event.
There might be a few of us when the Mariners play the BlueJays.
We went to those games regularly when the kids were young.
    The Yucca plant is extraordinary.

  8. I love “Our Lord’s Candle” – a pretty bush and a lovely name.

You were pretty clever to get 3 meals out your roast – I’m making a ham right now and hoping to accomplish the same 🙂

Have a wonderful trip up to Seattle – I’m so glad you’ll have this time with your family.

  9. Our Lord’s Candle is a stunning plant! We have nothing like that around here.

You are making me hungry. Those dinners sound yummy as does those mouthwatering pictures of your breakfast. I love eating breakfast out.

Yeah for six weeks in Seattle.
