I Love to go a-wandering…

People are always confusing me – The Happy Wonderer as in “I’m always wondering about things” with the song The Happy Wanderer. I suppose I am a Happy Wanderer too as many of my treks verify so with this post I’m including the words to the song. They make me smile…

Tide was high early today so we opted to head to Sycamore Canyon to do our Scenic Hike. On the way I spotted several fins in the water so we pulled over on PCH (Pacific Coast Hiway) to take a look.

We saw several Dolphin rising up out of the water in groups of two. Very hard to click the camera at the right time and catch them.

I got this one pretty well. We watched the dolphin for a while and then headed to Sycamore Canyon for our hike.

The Happy Wanderer

 I love to go a-wandering,
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.

Chorus:
Val-deri,Val-dera,
Val-deri,
Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-deri,Val-dera.
My knapsack on my back.

I love to wander by the stream
That dances in the sun,
So joyously it calls to me,
“Come! Join my happy song!”

I wave my hat to all I meet,
And they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet
From ev’ry green wood tree.

High overhead, the skylarks wing,
They never rest at home
But just like me, they love to sing,
As o’er the world we roam.

Oh, may I go a-wandering
Until the day I die!
Oh, may I always laugh and sing,
Beneath God’s clear blue sky!

Here we are at our destination looking down onto PCH and looking back at the rocks where we stopped and saw the dolphin. That is Point Magu.

It was fun to watch the pelican from above and to zoom in to capture these shots.

On our way down we got some close-ups of the deer. This was the first time we’ve seen deer on our hikes here.

We saw these little critters at the end of our hike.

It really is a treat to get out and experience a bit of the wild side and to get our hearts a pumping. Happy wanderings to y’all!

  1. I loved this post. Your hike was full of all kinds of sightings! Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Looks a bit overcast there too…or was that the marine layer?

Oh, may you always laugh and sing, beneath God’s clear blue sky!

  2. Oh what lovely surroundings you have! The pictures are wonderful and you’ve captured perfectly the joys of wandering through the world the Lord has made as well as the happy surprises that come from wondering about the particulars of the sights and sounds it holds. I love your blog. Blessings, Sharon

  3. Ellen, what a wonderful, beautiful hike! I would be so thrilled to see dolphins swimming and the beauty of the oceanside. Your hiking trail was so pretty too. What a treat!

  4. Hi Ellen,

Thank you for taking us along with you as you wonder and wander through your beautiful world. Gorgeous shots as always. The song makes me smile too. I used to drive my daughter nuts when she was at a certain age and I’d start singing that song full voice. It wasn’t like there was anyone around when I did it so I doubt I was upsetting the birds.

    Cheers, Carver

  5. when I see your georgous wandering walks…I always “wonder” if you see snakes…along along with the deer, rabits, seagulls, etc. !!??

M.Lou! No snakes yet thank goodness. There is a very real danger of seeing them around these parts…the rattler kind and I’m not fond of thinking of that. I’m glad we walk in the very coolest part of the day generally when they are least likely to be out and about :0)

  6. great walk ellen..how fortunate you are to be so close to the ocean…how lovely!

Love your prayer for everyday…and the How good it is when brothers and sisters dwell together in unity verses also! Very precious!

Thank you..and thanks also for your visit to my blog!

  7. ahh, thx for the snake answer! That makes sense about the cool of the day. Ya know….looking at your picture, you two walk (hike) a long ways!!!

  8. Ellen – I just love your joyful attitude toward life. You do “wander” quite a bit to interesting places — but you “wander” with a purpose, because you belong to Jesus!

    Blessings!

  9. Wonderful pictures. I always knew the first verse of Happy Wanderer. Found this while looking for piano music to go with the lyrics.
A group of us hiked in Pinnicles NM.

It seemed like the just the thing to sing coming off the High Peaks trail.
