Fall Into Reading ~

How exciting a new season of reading is here! I’m a little behind with my summer list so I’ll need to start my Fall reading with these and add a few more…

Leftovers from my Summer Reading…

Hood~ by Stephen Lawhead – “Like the forest itself, Hood is deep, dark and at times savagely brutal- yet full of enchantment and hope. Internationally acclaimed author S.R. Lawhead has created a lyrical rendering of a time-honored story that will lead you down strange pathways into another time and place.

The Documents in the Case ~ by Dorothy Sayers – “An intricate murder mystery.” “Each of the characters is revealed in a series of letters and statements which work up to a dramatic climax”

New for my Fall Reading List…

Faithfulness and Holiness, The Witness of J.C. Ryle ~ J. I. Packer/ J. C. Ryle – “With admiration for a life well-lived, beloved author J.I. Packer endeavors to introduce this great man of faith as a spiritual mentor to a new generation.”

Taste and See ~ John Piper – “…this devotional of contemporary meditations on biblical reality will whet your appetite for more of God himself and refresh you in your daily communion with Christ.”

Peace Like a River~ Leif Enger – “…a heroic quest, a tragedy, and a love story, in which ‘what could be unbelievable becomes extraordinary”

Pierced by the Word ~ John Piper – “31 meditations to awaken your faith”

The Tale of Beatrix Potter ~ Margaret Lane – “Few life stories are so intriguing as that of Beatrix Potter, artist and author, whose stories and pictures, which took the nurseries of Victorian England by storm, still have heart-lifting freshness and appeal”

The Dean’s Watch~ Elizabeth Goudge -“An English cathedral town in the mid-nineteenth century forms the background for the warm and gentle story of Isaac Peabody, an obscure clockmaker, and of Adam Ayscough, the brilliant, pious Dean of the cathedral, whose great love for his parishioners is stifled by his own unconquerable shyness.”

I was excited to find this Goudge book at the local library. It was the only one of her books on the shelf. I’ll need to read it first since it’s due in October. I’ve read two of her children’s books which I thoroughly enjoyed. Her descriptions are so wonderful.

Head on over to Callapiddar Days to see all the books you’ve never even heard of …

  1. “Peace Like a River” was EXCELLENT! That guy sure knows how to write! I hope you love it! Good luck with your list!

((I just noticed the EFree link on your sidebar. Are you with the EFC? I am! *smile*))

  2. aaahhh, I’m still working on my summer reading list too!! From 5 years ago!!

    🙂

Can’t imagine why I might not have enough time to read all that I’d like….can YOU?

    heeheehee

  3. Thanks for visiting my blog – I like your list. The Goudge book sounds very interesting – I like historical books, too.

And honestly: quite some of the books on my list have been Summer leftovers – the Summer was far to busy for reading *sigh*

    Have a great reading time!

  4. i’ve been hearing good things about Peace Like a River for a number of years, but i’ve not yet gotten around to it. i’ll be interested in reading your review.

happy reading! thanks for stopping by!

  5. The Beatrix Potter one sounds really interesting. My nursery is decorated in it and I have read some background on her but nothing comprehensive.

Enjoy Peace Like a River, I know I did.

  6. hmm, I see many books on your list that I am not familiar with, but sound really good and thoughtful. I left my list short so I could look around and lift, ahem, get ideas from other’s lists.

I just watched Miss Potter, the book looks good-she really was an interesting person, and I love her art.

The Dean’s watch almost sounds MacDonald-ish, looks good too.

    happy fall reading!

  7. These look like great books- most are new to me, but I did just happen to see Taste and See at the church library this morning as I was perusing! I just may have to read this one soon!
    Blessings!

  8. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Great list of books. I am going to look into the book on Beatrix Potter…sounds intersting! I really enjoyed the movie based on her life.

  9. Ellen,

Thanks for stopping by Bibliophile’s Retreat. I don’t know about being a disciplined reader. I just am one of those people who “have to read”. I know about how much I get through in a given amount of time and “scheduling” the books I want to read or have committed to read by a certain time gives me a measure of do I have room to add more to my list and when as well as a concrete tracking tool for meeting deadlines and working through my piles of books. ;~D

  10. Ellen, great list! I may have to put a few of these titles on my “future reads” list. 🙂

Hood by Stephen Lawhead is very good, but it took me a while to really get into it. I kept waiting to get to the point of the story, you know? But taken as a whole and read with the understanding that this book is just the beginning of the entire story, it’s classic Lawhead. Scarlet is the 2nd book, and I can’t wait to read it. My sons (ages 17 and 14) have scheduled a rock-paper-scissors tournament for the day I receive Scarlet ~ the winner gets to read the book as soon as I’m done (the loser has to wait until the winner’s done reading it)! LOL

    Happy reading!

    Blessings,
    Trish

  11. Great list. I just learned about j.c.ryle in my science and religion class, so am interesting in what he has to say. Another book to add to my wish list.

    Enjoy!

  12. Thanks for stopping by and can I just say that your banner makes me so happy!! What a beautiful pic!

Your list looks really good, the Beatrix Potter sounds pretty cool!

  13. Hello, and thank you for stopping by my place!
hat an interesting reading list you’ve got!
Murder mysteries and dark novels are not my thing, but Taste and See and The Dean’s Watch i am going to check in awhile. And I so much love Beatrix Potter!
Wishing you many happy hours of reading. And i promise to link to you and visit again!

  14. Like I told Lana, I forgot all about Sayers! I wanted to read something of hers after I saw y’all’s list last time around…of course, these lists are really more like guidelines, right? I too have “Hood” but haven’t read it; I look forward to hearing what you think!

  15. Tales of Beatrix Potter sounds interesting; I haven’t started my Peace like a River one yet. Hubby went to hear John Piper last year and enjoyed him.

  16. Just thought I’d check how you were doing when I saw the button on your side bar – I think we’d appreciate similar books!!
