Nothing New Under the Sun

The more you read, especially the Bible, the more you find out that phrases and concepts that seem new really go way back to another time or another author. Take the following quote from Tolkien’s, The Lord of the Rings, that “dear” just read to me:

“Ever he would search and would question us above all else concerning the Great Battle that was fought upon Dagorlad in the beginning of Gondor, when He whom we do not name was overthrown.”

Does that ring a bell my fellow Harry Potter fans?

Two other phrases that are in the Bible and used in recent movies, songs, etc.

In 1 Samuel 14:7 Jonathon’s armor-bearer says “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.” Are any of you singing a tune after reading that. (I think I’m dating myself here)

“Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin” ” Tekel, you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting;” Daniel 5:27

This phrase was used in the movie “A Knight’s Tale”

Any others you can think of?

Blessings, LNB

  1. There are so many!

By the skin of your teeth!

Job 19:20 My bones stick to my skin and my flesh; I have escaped alive with only the skin of my teeth.

  2. That should be a matter of course. The book that has forged the entire western civilization has, naturally, been a primary source of inspiration, imagery, plot, motives, etc. for authors ever since it came into existence (though as an aside, Tolkien is so full of references to other works of literature, there is something new to discover every day.)
What one can conclude from that is a completely different story, though. There is nothing new, perhaps, but to say there is nothing new since the Bible was written with a special emphasis, just refuses to look further back and find how the Bible, too, contains tons of references to older works (the Holy Trinity or the self-sacrifice of the godly being not the least). In other words: When it comes to “concepts” that drive people, you will find them in books as old as the Bible or far older, because things like love, hate, strife, envy, compassion, all exquisite literary topics are deeply anthropological and have not changed in eons.

  3. Ahh, I’m more simple in my thinking. But the struggle with sin predates the existence of man and any writings because before the creation of the world Lucifer defined the whole sin issue dealing with pride and power and ambition. This is the beginning of things like hate, strife, envy, etc. God’s response to all these issues is the best love story of all
    Thanks for stopping by, Karl.

I read all comments and appreciate them.
