A couple of mighty fine looking bucks came to visit our back acres a week or so ago. We were hoping this one wasn’t going to hop onto the deck.
Tom’s comment got me hunting info on this velvet antler stage of life on the buck.
When antlers are in velvet, they are very vulnerable to being injured. Bucks seem to be very aware that they have this fragile treasure on their head and are very careful in their actions throughout antler genesis. Bruises, cuts, or tears to the velvet can all have an impact on the formation of the antler.
The velvet nourishes the growing antler for about five months. During development, antlers are delicate and extremely sensitive to the touch.
Velvet antler is covered in a hairy, velvet-like “skin” known as velvet and its tines are rounded, because the antler has not calcified or finished developing.

Check out the muscles on that Buck! This tree/bush is filled with berries for the first time since we moved in. We think it is a Saskatoon berry. Whatever it is these Bucks were enjoying the berries.

This week I’m still recovering and I’m off my game, as they say.
The fire I wrote about was at 20% containment as of yesterday. It’s a tough terrain to deal with. Hope all is well in your corner.
…bucks in vervet! I will be on the road with my lap top this weekend. Commenting on WordPress can be a challenge.
Enjoy your road trip, Tom!
Wonderful sighting of the bucks, great series of photos.
Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend!
Thank you, Eileen. Hope you have a good weekend.
Oh my goodness! Those are a couple of nice looking bucks! Just wait until they grow up! LOL! Thanks for sharing today!
Hi Monica, Thanks for stopping by. We had a momma and two fawns visit yesterday.
I love to see the fawns running around momma! 🙂
Great photos!
Thanks, Arti. Hope all is well in your corner…
I’m well, thank you. Have a great summer!
Thanks for allowing me to witness the delicate beauty of velvet antlers in your backyard! Berry good!💕
Thank you, Mary. There is always something new to see and learn. Blessings.
They are beautiful. You sure got some fantastic photos of them.
Thanks, Karen. They stayed put for long enough to be able to zoom in.
What a beautiful buck! I love the velvet antlers. We are seeing a good many deer out and about now in our area…especially on the back road that we take to and from church. And black bear also on the move here right now.
I’m relieved to hear that the fire is now 20% contained. May God bless those who are risking their lives in order to give protection to others.
Hopefully your weekend will be a time of resting some more for you as you recuperate from all of that hard work you did to get ready for the garage sale. Hugs.
Thank you, Dianna. Each day I’m getting more and more back to ‘normal’. 🙂
Dianna, my brain and body are slowly making a comeback! Thanks for your sweet comments.
That is interesting about their velvet antlers.
Glad the fire is somewhat contained.
Have a nice weekend.
Thank you, Debby.
