A Foggy Beginning Hodgepodge

Today is the first Wednesday Hodgepodge of 2024. Thank you to Joyce!

1. Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they’d like to see banished from the Queen’s English. Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse or just general uselessness (go here to read more about how the words were chosen). Here are the words/phrases they’d like to see banished in 2024-

hack, impact, at the end of the day, rizz, slay, iconic, cringe worthy, obsessed, side hustle, wait for it

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why?Are any of these a regular part of your speech? Is there a word not on the list that you’d like to add?

I’m all for banishing rizz since I still don’t remember what it means or why it is a word. None of the other words/phrases bother me enough to banish them.

2. What do you wish you’d done more of last year? Less of?

More walking…less sitting

3. A place you’d like to visit in this new year? Do you think you will?

Scotland pops into my head but I don’t think that will happen so I’ll go with the beach as in somewhere along the West coast with the Pacific waves coming onto the shore. The last time I was at a beach was in January of 2023.

4.What are three words to sum up or describe your 2023?

Family, Travel, Renovation

5. What advice would you like to give yourself as we begin a new year?
~
Love Jesus more in twenty twenty four!

We have been in a foggy pattern with less snow than usual here in our corner of the world. I took the photo at the top of this post on our way to Spokane yesterday. We did our big box store shopping before the predicted snow of this coming weekend. It takes most of the day when we drive the 70 plus miles there and back again.  I’m still working on getting Christmas tucked away until next year. I’m looking forward to getting back to a somewhat normal schedule around here. Hope all is starting well for you.

  1. Great answers and a beautiful photo! We have started out the new year well with more walking, but I need to work on less sitting too.

Our pastor put the following on our church sign: Know Christ more in 2024. A bit similar to your thought. Great goals for all of us in a new year.

  2. Your answers for Questions 2 and 5 resonate with me! We are hosting a (rescheduled because of illness) dinner party for Ron’s siblings and their spouses this weekend, so I am leaving Christmas decor in place a bit longer, but I will be ready for a more normal schedule after that.

  3. Rizz and slay. I only vaguely know what it means, to do whatever you want and look good doing it, but what a dark word. Rizz? No idea.

I would love to visit Russia. Maybe not the best time.

  4. We have our grandchildren here this weekend as my son-in-law and daughter are going to a job interview not too far from here. I won’t get myself in gear for the new year until sometime next week. I’ve put away a few things, but we’re leaving out some decor since the kids will enjoy it. I didn’t put up trees this year so don’t have that big job this time around. I always say my new year starts somewhere around the 9th or 10th. Works for me!

  5. The fog has been hanging low here too, Ellen. I don’t recognize the word rizz either! Never seen it before! When we go to town to do big box shopping, like you, it is an all-day affair. Hoping we do get some good amount of snow, as I am hopeful to begin my cross country skiing again soon. Many blessings to you!

  6. I recommend a walking pad for the walking! We got one and it’s been lovely for indoor walking. Smaller than a treadmill, can store under a bed. 😁

  7. Hi, I love the photo you shared!! We still do not have any snow here in Wisconsin, which is so strange. Last year we had so much, over 100 inches!! The grass is still showing this Winter.
    Happy New Year,
    Carla

  8. That foggy photo is beautiful. Needs to be blown up and framed!
I’d like to travel but its that or our pets – and we choose our pets. I can’t leave them. I’m a overly-responsible pet owner! I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Thankfully I did travel in my younger days. I don’t trust anyone with my pets and have had bad pet sitters. For the most part since we live here in California, there are still things here I have not seen – so that’s what we tend to do. Plus we can take the dog with us. The cat is fine for a day without us.

I learned to drive in the fog – living on the coast and I worked in San Francisco, and fog is a natural occurrence especially in the summer months.

Enjoyed your answers and Happy New Year.

  9. I’m all in for more walking and less sitting. Yes, getting to the beach and watching the waves is wonderful. We Got to Carlsbad last year. Love Jesus is the perfect choice. The photo is beautiful. Glad you got your shopping done. I’ve been sick since the 2nd and can’t even work on taking down Christmas now. It’s definitely frustrating.

I read all comments and appreciate them.
